CHAPTER SIX

For Chase, driving into town with the other ranch hands was usually a fun time—but not today. This time the trip was quiet, no music, no joking around. Just the hushed tones of the men coming up with a plan. In the end, Noah had asked both Byron and Elijah to accompany Chase and Drew to the meeting. Lancaster was normally a pleasant place to live, though today was different. For the first time people would see him and Drew together since they stopped being friends all those years ago.

Chase wasn’t an idiot. He knew if some people saw Drew holding his hand or something they would cross the street to get away from them. Others might cuss them out or even spit on them. He’d seen it happen to the boss and Riley more than once. This was what Kelly Mack had been afraid of happening if people had found out about them. Funny how Drew didn’t seem to care what other people thought. That was the one thing that made Chase love him the most—he wasn’t ashamed.

The closer they got to town the more nervous Chase became. He wasn’t afraid for himself. He had been called names his whole life. He was used to it. He worried more because people weren’t always nice and he didn’t want anyone saying anything that might upset Drew enough so he would break up with Chase. Things were finally looking like a sun-shiny day in his life, and Chase didn’t want that to end. He liked being happy.

His thoughts came back to the present as Drew reached across the front seat and squeezed his thigh. “Are you okay, babe?”

“Yeah, just scared someone might say something to make you leave me,” he answered honestly.

“Never gonna happen.” The smile Drew sent his way helped ease the flutters in his gut, but still he got the feeling that bad things were going to happen today. He didn’t know what it was exactly—just that it was possibly going to have the whole town staring at them and pointing fingers.

With everything going on, Chase knew he had to suck it up and move on…his mind could become a scary place if he let himself fall into the depths of darkness therein.

Drew continued, “What could possibly happen that would cause you to worry so much?”

The way Drew was talking, Chase wasn’t sure if he was right in the head—Drew that is. There were so many things that could go wrong, but he decided just to name one. “Your momma could find out about us.”

“She more than likely will. Momma is going to find out eventually, but you have to remember, I no longer live or work on the Golden Spur, so no matter what she says, it ain’t going to affect me one iota. Momma has no say over my life anymore.”

“Are you sure, Drew?”

“I’m sure. You’re more important to me than her approval. I’m a grown man and can make up my own mind of who I want to be with,” Drew answered.
